HOW A VILLAGE WORKS:

Villages are unique, locally-determined communities where members can stay in their home as long as possible.  Members can be homeowners, renters, people sharing housing, or living with family.  Members are supported by a network of caring volunteers who are trained.  Members are supported with village-recommended paid service providers.  Membership is affordable and provides a social community as well as practical services to meet changing needs.

Berea Home Village:

  • Membership-driven, grassroots, nonprofit organization

  • Run by volunteers and paid staff

  • Coordinates access to affordable services

  • Provides volunteer services including transportation, inspiring health and wellness programs, home repairs, social and educational activities

  • Offers access to village-recommended service providers

  • Helps members meet their needs to age safely and successfully in their own homes

  • Positively impacts isolation, interdependence, health and purpose of members to reduce overall cost of care

How Berea Home Village began:

In the absence of a local built retirement community, some 30 Berea residents interested in maintaining independent living in their own homes came together to realize this vision. To facilitate their goals, the group organized a steering committee and received a grant that enabled them to become a member of the national Village-to-Village Network (http://www.vtvnetwork.org/). With the support of network resources, the committee completed the tasks to create the needed infrastructure. Incorporated as a Kentucky Non Profit corporation since March 8, 2017, Berea Home Village (BHV) is now recognized as a 501c3 by the Internal Revenue Service. Berea Home Village board consists of registered nurses (with public health, parish nursing, and hospice experience), teachers, local business leaders, accountants, and other professionals with non-profit and for-profit experience.   St. Joseph Berea provides office space for BHV. BHV provides a variety of social and educational offerings to the Berea community that focuses on building community while informing attendees about the purpose of the village and what is needed to change the culture to one that is supportive of aging and thriving in our own homes.

Berea Home Village offers people an affordable option for staying in their own homes when transportation and household chores become difficult – the point at which many older people have to leave their familiar surroundings. This innovative solution is perfect for those who wish to remain active, independent, and socially connected to their communities.

It’s really true that there’s no place like home, and for those of us who call Berea home, there is a deep and abiding affection for this special community.   Many of us desire to stay rooted in Berea for the rest of our lives. This becomes challenging and often impractical, as we age.   Berea Home Village offers people an affordable option for staying in their own homes when transportation and household chores become difficult – the point at which many older people have to leave their familiar surroundings. This innovative solution is perfect for those who wish to remain active, independent, and socially connected to their communities.
